Frequently Asked Questions
How do I qualify for a bonus?
Prior Active Duty, AGR and some former National Guard and Reserve may qualify for an Enlisted Affiliated Bonus or an Officer Affiliated Bonus.
The amount is dependent upon the MOS and term of service you wish to commit to. A Soldier could qualify for as much as $20,000 starting at a 3-year commitment.
Will I have to go back through MEPS?
No, you will not have to go through MEPS if you transfer out of the IRR. You will sign a personnel action form and provide me with your photo ID and that's it! It's a smooth and painless transfer.
Do I lose my rank or have to go back through basic training?
No! While serving in the IRR, you are not on a break in service thus accruing time in service and time in grade. Once you make that decision to start actively drilling, you could be well on your way to your next rank.

And you do not have to go back through basic training. As an IRR Soldier, you are already serving on your initial contract. It is a simple transfer from the IRR to a Reserve unit.
What if I want to change my MOS?
That is not an issue. As long as you meet the ASVAB scores for the MOS you want to transfer to, it can be easily done. Once you in-processed with your unit, your training NCO will get you scheduled for MOS re-class school which is a shorter version of what you went through at AIT. The classes are usually broken down into phases or can be one longer class. Again, it all just depends on the MOS you are choosing.
